What is SEM?
SEM Spotlight “In doing we learn.” George Herbert, poet
Type I’s—Students are regularly exposed to a wide variety of topics, and disciplines that are not normally covered in the regular curriculum.
Type II’s—Students are involved in skills training activities. These include creative and critical skills, advanced research and reference skills, and creative problem solving activities.
Type III’s—Through increased involvement with other type of enrichment experiences (academic service-learning), students will develop advanced thinking skills and stimulate new interests. Students will work in groups to develop an authentic product (community garden).
Academic Service Learning
Our school has been awarded a service learning grant for a community garden. SEM will focus on teaching the kindergarten and first grade students how to create a community garden. The purpose of the project is to help students to beautify their school campus, understand how plants and vegetables grow, and increase their performance in the areas of math problem solving, reading comprehension, and writing. If there are any staff members that have a “green thumb”, please feel free to contact Ms. Anderson or Ms. Ford. SEM Spotlight
